This quote is very sad and depressing. The girl in this book is born with a defect that makes her unable to walk while she is still in the womb. This leads to some stress on her mother while she is pregnant due to the fact that she can't deliver the baby without risking the life of her daughter. As a result, the mother feels pressured to have a son.

When she does give birth, it is to a girl who dies shortly after birth. The girl's mother feels guilt over not having a boy and feels like her life is ruined for this reason. It is very sad that an innocent child had to suffer because of her parent's greed for power and wealth.
